A name is one of the first gifts we give a child -
a choice filled with meaning and love.
For some parents, the perfect name has been chosen long before their baby arrives. For others, it takes months of lists, suggestions, crossed-out favourites and plenty of debate before one finally feels right.
Names can come from everywhere. Family traditions, people we love, favourite places, books, nature, different cultures or simply a name we hear once and never forget.
And just like fashion, names have trends of their own. Names that seemed to disappear for a generation suddenly return, traditional names find a new audience, and new names and spellings appear seemingly out of nowhere.
At The Knit Studio, we've had a front-row seat to baby names since 2008. Thousands have passed through our Mornington Peninsula studio over the years, knitted into blankets one at a time. We've watched old favourites return, new names emerge and different spellings become popular. It's one of the more interesting parts of what we do.
But perhaps the nicest thing about names is that no matter how popular or unusual one might be, once it belongs to someone you love, it takes on a completely different meaning. It becomes part of a family's story.
And after all these years, we still love seeing what the next one will be.
